How Does GET QURIOUS Foster Learning?

Each box includes activities and games that spark curiosity as a child makes choices, and sequences various activity pieces. Then, they experience the magic of their selections coming to life through colorful 3D animation when playing with the corresponding Augmented Reality app. They can play over and over again – alone or with friends – and the 3D animation changes to new variations each time, depending on their choices. This type of playful discovery is well-regarded by educators and child experts to encourage learning.

What Is Augmented Reality?

GET QURIOUS designs their products to include not only the activities that come with each box, but also a corresponding app that provides additional play value through the magic of Augmented Reality. This technology is a new and exciting way to combine real world elements into a digital game that virtually bring the elements to life in colorful 3D animation.

How Does Augmented Reality Help Learning?

GET QURIOUS fosters learning by incorporating both physical and digital play into their activities. For example, when children play with the Space Explorer Box, they are selecting and sequencing Story cards and choosing Build a Spaceship cards. Then – after they scan their selections with the Explorer app that has been downloaded in their digital device – they can read along or listen to the story they created, plus maneuver through the digital world of planets and asteroids with the spaceship they ‘built’. With their masks, they can record their own version of a story, using their real voice or a silly one created with an audio mixer. They can also go on a Treasure Hunt game, collecting fun artifacts in four colorful digital worlds they ‘created’ through Augmented Reality. Then, by choosing different cards, masks, and game mats, they can play again, experiencing new variations to the stories and games they created.

GET QURIOUS supports adding Art into their products – to become STEAM learning – because Art sparks a child’s imagination and transforms STEM learning into a hands-on experience. Art allows a child to apply creative thinking and design skills so their STEM learning become unique and personal to them.

Why Add Reading, to Become STREAM?

Reading is added to all GET QURIOUS products since its mastery – in combination with communication through speech or writing – also sparks the creative process. Through the Build-a- Story activities in our products, children are learning about story creation, plus understanding how changes in story elements such as characters and storyline can create different outcomes. This type of reading and comprehension skill is essential to mastering their creative thinking for all forms of learning, including the STEM subjects.

STREAM learning in early childhood is important for many reasons. First, it helps young children to explore and understand the world around them. Plus, it allows them to collaborate with their peers, and express their thinking or creativity. Later in life, children with these skills are better able to answer complex questions, investigate issues, and develop solutions for real world problems. Most importantly, studies have shown that children without an aptitude for STEM by middle school will fall behind their peer group in education and their career paths. Lastly, the U.S. is currently only average in global Math, Science, and Reading (PISA) scores, so this learning is essential for our continued success in the world marketplace.

How can GET QURIOUS Activities Help?

GET QURIOUS activities help STREAM learning in many ways. For example, the Space Explorer Box teaches science terminology and reading within the Build a Story activity. Children can then role-play with the Mask Play feature, recording their voices as they create and play back their own stories over and over.

The Explorer Box also introduces technology, engineering and math within its Build a Spaceship activity. Children are shown how to assemble a rocket ship by scanning four different parts of the ship in a specific sequence. They then move the digital parts to their correct position, similar with how a 4-piece tangram is put together. In addition, they choose from many different art designs and colors of each shape, so each space ship is unique based on their creative choices. Once assembled, the rocket ship blasts off, and children can maneuver around asteroids or collect objects as they explore outer space.
